French Bench

I’ve been trying to organize my picture files, which I find almost as exciting as organizing my sock drawer. However, one good thing came out of it (and it wasn’t finding my matching blue-striped fuzzy socks, although I really would like to) – I came across one of my summer projects that never got to be posted!  Poor thing.

Anyway, based on my French chocolate coffee table (which spawned a few more similar projects  here, here, and here), I decided to transform this old bench…

kidpics 003

…into a ‘vintage French’ piece!

My original idea was just to sand the top down to bare wood, and paint the base of the bench.

kidpics 004

But do you see those wide panels that run along the front and the back? The bench told me (if you have read my blog, you’ll know that furniture often talks to me) that those spaces were perfect for more typography. So before I knew it (not really—it took forever) I had sanded the entire bench down!

I only worried about removing the old finish. All the knicks, scrapes, and dings are welcome to stick around.  That’s character.

Next thing was to choose the perfect graphic (all of my French ads have been found at The Graphics Fairy), print it out, and then take it to an office store to be copied onto an overhead transparency.

Here I am at work…

If you’ve seen my other projects, you’ll notice that I’ve gotten a little smarter. I put this piece up on a folding table so I didn’t have to contort myself on the floor so much!!

And in case you’re wondering…I am using a plain old bottle of acrylic paint. (Others have suggested using paint markers or a Sharpie, but I don’t think they distress as well. You can use whatever suits you best.)

I really dressed up for this impromptu photo shoot, can’t you tell?

kidpics 013

This is what the bench looks like before any distressing or staining.

kidpics 014

I actually used lines from two other ads for the front and back panels of the bench.

kidpics 015

They may or may not make sense with what the top says!

After the paint was completely dry, I distressed the lettering with sandpaper, and then wiped on a coat of Minwax Antique Walnut stain. I finished the bench with a couple of coats of Minwax Polycrylic.

This little bench went with me to an outdoor market in July. It was one of the last projects I finished before going, so it missed out on a ‘formal’ photo shoot in my home! But here’s what it looked like outside on a beautiful July day.

You may not have noticed it, but those two side panels actually hide a lower cubby. I envision this as an entry bench with a place to hide shoes! (I painted the inside black.)

So that’s my little French Bench. If this looks like a project you would like to try, be sure and check around for a used overhead projector. Lots of times you can find them at school surplus sales, or you might even be able to borrow one from your local school.

Ahh, summer….

Simple Fix

Sometimes I really love a project that doesn't require a lot!

Case in point: this vanity bench, which was given to me.

The upholstery was nasty and dirty...

But the legs were actually quite lovely.
They were loose, but nothing a little glue couldn't fix!
I chose not to paint them, but I cleaned them up with Walnut Restore-A-Finish.

I bought a piece of 3" foam for the seat (just over $6) and
sewed a cover with fabric leftover from my living room curtains.

Voila!

So much better!

Spring is coming!

...And that means it's time to get back to my garage!

My husband left town for about four days this week, leaving his side of the garage empty.

Nature abhors a vacuum.

So I filled it up for him.

I am tickled to be back to looking for my furniture bargains! I really didn't know how much I missed it!

In celebration...here's my first furniture project of 2011

What about the cabinet-at-the-top-of-the-stairs, you ask? Didn't count. It was for me, and I worked on it INSIDE the house!

I picked up this little coffee table at Deseret Industries this week. It didn't look too good, which explains why I got it for $10.

I have a friend who was looking for a bench for Touch of Class Photography, so I snatched it up (he does amazing work if you happen to need a photographer in northern Utah).

But this is a coffee table, not a bench. Meh. No biggee. This particular table has iron legs (see?), which seem rather bench-ish, and it's higher than a normal coffee table. And it was $10. It'll work.

The top was good solid oak under the horrible finish.

I applied two coats of Minwax Antique Walnut Stain, and two coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane.

Still looks like a coffee table to YOU? Well, probably, since it's in the middle of my living room!

I guess I should have let my children sit on it after all...

I really have been busy

Birthday Wedding cakes crafts parties

Life has been extra busy lately, but something that has me feeling good is the completion of a new project--another bench! I found this treasure at a garage sale:

Isn't she purty?? Let me just say that there was a LOT of great furniture at this particular yard sale, but the owner obviously thought VERY HIGHLY of what he had! This little bench, however, with the caning completely missing from one side, was a good buy!

My friend "D" had been wanting a bench for her bedroom, so I sent her a picture of this one immediately. Sold!

The plan was to put an upholstered seat on the bench. I had a piece of plywood cut to the general dimensions by my table-saw-owning friend. Then I made a pattern out of scraps of wrapping paper to follow the curves and corners of the bench. I taped the pattern directly to the plywood, and...

Look at this! I cut this shape out my very own self with my very own jigsaw! (I bought the jigsaw a couple of months ago. Had to wait until it was properly "aged" to use it, you know.)

Please ignore a couple of little zigs into the wood. I promise they won't show.

First a layer of 2" Nu-Foam went on the plywood, and then I stapled a layer of batting on with my pneumatic stapler (another fun toy) to give nice smooth edges.

Next came the fabric! Do you recognize it? It is the same that is on this bench at the end of my bed! I had just enough left.

Oh, I probably forgot to mention the paint job. I used Rustoleum's flat black paint, and then distressed it to show the pretty details.

I love the pretty curved handles.

I added three buttons on top. I used my stapler to staple through all the layers of fabric and foam, and then hot-glued the buttons on. That particular method seems to work just as well (and it's a lot easier) than stringing them through holes in the plywood.

Here she is in all her glory!
