A Very Special Thanksgiving Week

So, I have pneumonia.  Needless to say, crafting, cooking, decorating and all the fun Christmas stuff has been put on hold until I see the Dr. again on Friday.  I'm feeling a little better, so hopefully all will look good and we can go cut down our tree this weekend!  But meanwhile, I thought I would share kind of a personal post with you all.........

This last Thanksgiving week was very special for my family.  We (Cottage Mama, Cottage Papa, Savannah Rose and Matilda Jane) flew down to Houston, Texas on November 19, 2010 to be there to celebrate my mom, Jane Harrison's marriage to her new husband, Allen Michel on November 21, 2010.

My Mom is such an incredible woman.  Yes, she is my mother, but she is so much more than that to me - she is my ear to talk to, my sounding-board for all things, my shopping buddy, my inspiration, my role-model, and above all things she is truly my best friend.  I feel so fortunate to be blessed with such an incredible relationship with another woman in this world and even more blessed to have that with my mother.

My Mom met Allen at the most perfect time in her life.  My husband Brett and I had just gotten married and my younger brother, Ben, was heading off to college.  Mom was officially going to be an empty-nester.  But not more than two weeks later did Mr. Allen Michel walk into her life.  And we are all so glad he did!

Allen is a wonderful man, good through and through.  He is honest, loyal, loving, trust-worthy and a truly good soul.  You can tell this simply by his presence and the fact that he has so many close friends who love him.  He loves my girls as if they were his own and Savannah and Matilda adore him as well.

I wanted to share some pictures of the special time we had during our week down in Houston, Texas.  I took some pictures at the rehearsal, but we'll have to wait for the professional wedding pictures at a later date.

Pure Joy

Daddy practicing with one of his flower girls (Matilda).  We gave them sweet and low packets to use as practice petals........classy, I know.

Savannah took her flower girl duties very seriously.

But not too seriously!

Next are some pictures taken at the wedding.  Some taken by me, some by my husband.  I'll share the professional ones with you once we receive them, but here's a little snippet.

The happy bride and groom after they first entered the reception.

Two of my Mom's three sisters flew in from California and Colorado for the wedding.  Aunt Nancy and Aunt Susan were a giant help in keeping the stress level to a minimum.

Miss Matilda has been really into her binky the last couple weeks due to some serious teething.  This was definitely her main accessory with "The Party Dress" (dress pattern HERE).

The girls had me dancing up a storm!

Matilda was so proud to be standing on her own.  She just loves dancing and had to be like big sister Savannah!

And my dear husband, Brett, read the girls stories as the wedding celebration came to an end.

We continued our stay in Texas through Thanksgiving week.  We had lots of fun just relaxing and taking it easy.

The girls had a blast playing with the bubble machine that my Mom and Allen (aka Pepo) got for them!

The girls had so much fun doing "Build a Bear" for the first time.  Savannah chose a super-soft puppy dog that she named "Snoopy" and Matilda chose a classic teddy bear that we helped her name "Molly".

We had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner at Mom and Allen's house.  It was really fun to use the centerpieces and bouquets from the wedding in our Thanksgiving decorations.

All and all there was a lot of joy and A LOT of fun had during this special Thanksgiving week.  We are so blessed to have Allen join our family and wish he and my Mom a lifetime of happiness and love!

Opinions Please

Yeah, it is Friday! I wish I had something fun and witty to share with you today but this brain is pooped. Instead I need your brains. Soooo, I saw these the other day and they grabbed me. My love for Frye boots has been well documented on here so this probably comes as no surprise. My question(s) for you are:

1. What do you think about the blue color? This is the second pair of blue boots I have wanted this year but I just can't commit...2. What do you think about the bows? I am not usually a bow person but when I saw these the embellishment did not bother me.
I would love to hear your opinions! Have a great weekend!

Weekend ~ Where Is It?

I was traveling last weekend and skipped a week of Weekend Where Is It?  So here we go with this weeks version.

Weekend ~ Where Is It?

I am going to show you two similar pictures. You tell me which one you think it is in the United States and which one is in Europe. All of the pictures shown each week, will be pictures I have taken.

Picture One

Picture Two

So, which one is in Europe and which one is in the United States?  I will reveal the answer on Monday.

In the meantime, I am spending the weekend decorating.  Pictures coming soon!
Welcome Home,

Christmas at Mom's (part 2)

If you missed Part 1, you can find it here!

....And so the decorating continued at my mother's house! It is like a treasure hunt to open box after box after box of beautiful Christmas decorations, and then decide where to put them all!

This little white vignette is in the (now) guest room. Lots of sparkly garland, lights, and fluffy snow complement a white-robed Father Christmas, and three polar bears named "Echo, Frank, and Holly." Really. That's what it says on the box! (But I think my niece wrote that in! ;-))

There are two china cabinets, but I think I forgot to take a picture of one of them. No matter; this one is my favorite. The five glass candleholders are etched with forest animals. I added some fake snow, pinecones, and pine garland, and then about 30 fat little birds. We call them "mushroom birds," although I have no idea why!

This little magazine table sports a new acquisition. If you're a Costco shopper, you may recognize this snowman from one of their recent magazines. He's super cute.

Although most of my mother's decorations are "new," (meaning they weren't around when *I* was a kid), the Nativity scene is an exception. It graces the piano. The Holy Family are from Anri, and they are so beautiful. The rest of the pieces are ceramic, and they were painted by my paternal grandmothers many years ago. Are they valuable, like the Anri pieces? Well, not in monetary terms, but they mean the world to me!

The sideboard is one of my favorite pieces of furniture. It was a Christmas gift for my mother many, many years ago, and it is one of her most prized possessions. It is such fun to decorate for Christmas!

She started collecting Fitz & Floyd figures several years ago, and they take up most of the space.
The little ceramic Christmas tree on the left is another piece my grandmother made. It has been in our home as long as I can remember.

These little plates on the bottom, though, are the real treasure. My mother china-painted for many years (she is not able to do it any more), and she created some amazing works of art. I love these four bird plates (and yes, I realize you can only see three)!

Tomorrow...the Christmas tree, and my two favorite decorations!

Catch As Catch Can

The DIY Show Off

Advent Calendar

I am so excited about the new look for my link party! Don't you think it's better to have pictures for the links showing? I hope you can visit each other and have fun. :)

Well, it is December; the countdown to Christmas has started in our household. Several years ago I started an advent calendar for my kids. The first year, I didn't have a fancy little house like you see in the picture. I made 25 small envelopes with a little note inside and taped them on the wall. The kids had no idea what I was trying to do at first, but soon they realized that "This is fun!”

For those small notes, I wrote down stuff like "Three golden coins"(they were chocolate candies), "Christmas movie with hot chocolate", "Bake cookies"; the list goes on.
Sometimes they will get a small gift from the dollar store.

Since there are three kids, they each take turns opening the door to see what the surprise is each morning. They get soo excited and giggly. I love watching their happy faces!

This year I have decided to do something different. I will write the usual list of things, but since they are older now, I added a couple "service" activities on the list. I know they will be so excited to be a secret Santa for someone, or shovel the drive way for our neighbor. I truly believe that "giving" gives us ultimate joy, especially around Christmas. I can't wait to see their reaction to the "service" notes.

Also, there is something different that happened this year to our advent calendar. My son Christopher came to me and said,

"Mom, when you open the calendar to get ready… DON’T OPEN the 3rd."

I was busy cooking and totally spaced that that is my birthday. Michael and Rachel were behind Christopher giggling.

"That's your birthday! Don't open and peek ok?"

I smiled and said, "Ok, I can't wait!"

I was so surprised and excited to see that my kids are growing up enough to care and do something for someone. Sometimes being a mom can be hard and exhausting (I don't know about you, but it is for me, ha! I said it!). Because of moments like this, all the hard work, time and love invested in them are totally worth it.

I shall see what they are planning for me on my birthday. :)

Etsy Shop - Hudson & Co

Hudson & Co on Etsy
I love Etsy for one of a kind home finds like my Brass Deer that I showed you (From Etsy Shop HavenVintage) and I also just snagged some awesome pieces from High Street Market (Etsy Shop Here) which I will show you in a little bit. But for us Canadians, the only downside to these awesome shops are that shipping rates to Canada are expensive. My good friend Erin who has amazing taste and skills at finding treasures started a new Etsy shop called Hudson & Co that I have a feeling will be the Canadian version of the popular US shops. So, for us Canadians, the shipping rates will be a bit more appealing. :) I've shown three of my favourites above, but since I did the image she added more awesome things so I recommend popping on over.  Now is the time for shopping to beat those Holiday deadlines by Canada Post. :)

Supermodeler Story: Zeljko Zdravkovic

Here’s a testimonial from Zeljko Zdravkovic (a.k.a Zex), who told us about his experience geo-modeling his hometown of Belgrade, Serbia.

I started modeling Belgrade because I wanted to create a 3D identity for my city. I first learned that it was possible to add a 3D building to Google Earth several years ago. I was very surprised and curious about this. I had also noticed a number of untextured models in Belgrade, and decided that I wanted to change that.

As is often the case when learning something new, I experienced many false starts. I didn't know how to use SketchUp, or, publish a model to Google Earth. I tried and tried, in failure. It wasn’t until I noticed a little checkbox labeled “Google Earth Ready” that I realized why my models where not appearing! I laugh about it now, but it was very frustrating then!

I started to make 3D models in the summer of 2009. Today you can see over 500 models that I’ve made. When combined with the work of other geo-modelers, there are over 800 models in Belgrade, and almost 1200 models in all of Serbia (including Belgrade).

With the exception of some buildings and monuments, I’ve finishing nearly 90% of the city area. I’m hoping to complete the entire city by the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012.

Unfortunately, Belgrade area is not available in Building Maker today. If it were, it would certainly have been far faster and easier. But when I finish the entire city, Belgrade is going to be one of the most quality-built 3D cities in Google Earth, and that’s something that I take a lot of pride in—for me, model quality is number one!

Црква Светог Марка (St. Mark's Church)

Google Earth is an excellent opportunity to promote your city to other people all over the globe. 3D models can benefit a city a lot. People all over the planet can see, learn from and enjoy the architecture of every building we make.

City TV Studio B now uses 3D “New Belgrade” area in Google Earth for traffic service information on their web site. They use a 3D map in their television broadcast. It’s such a fantastic feeling when you see your 3D models on TV, or used by others for very useful purposes.

It is so amazing how Google Earth has enabled the world to become so personal to us. Now anyone can visit every corner of the globe. It’s really amazing to me!

{Jonas's * Room}

Yes, believe it or not, there are other rooms in our house besides the dining room.
Currently, I've been working on my son's room.
{it's been sorely neglected}
sorely...
{in my defense, we just moved in this past summer}
but, we're movin' past that,
this room will shine I tell ya'.
I've got a great grass green on the upper part of the walls, and just finished (we'll most of) the trim.
Here's the over-all plan...

with some fun bedding thrown in.
So, more to come.
