Finally...St. Vincent Nursery Pictures

This past Spring I had the incredible honor of being asked by St. Vincent's Hospital to design a nursery for a deserving family. St. Vincent's partnered with ABC33/40 to host the contest. Out of all the entries three were chosen to share their story on Talk of Alabama. From there, viewers voted and one deserving family was picked. The Reed family lost their home during the January tornados that came through Alabama. They had to rebuild from the ground up. I am so, so grateful I was able to design the nursery for them. Two weeks was all the time I had once the winner was chosen. Usually in this industry you cannot accomplish anything in two weeks but some amazing people and companies helped me out. Details shots and information coming in a follow-up post.

First comes the rug....then come the twins! The rug is amazing; I had to control my urges to throw myself on top of it.....literally.

The Nursery: 38 Weeks

Twas two weeks before my due date, when all through the house, every creature was stirring, especially my spouse*.

The curtains were hung in nursery with care, with hopes that Baby Strong would soon be there.

The nursery is really coming together, I can't wait to share it with you but there is still more to be done so for now I am going to wait before showing the whole room. Here are some peeks though...

*I have to say a special thank you to Patrick who has been working so hard every spare minute for weeks now. Painting, hanging, painting, building, painting, measuring, painting.....you get the picture. Pre-baby he was always helpful around the house, he loves a good project, but he did not paint. Little did he know his journey to fatherhood would include roughly 72,000 hours holding a paint brush....

The Ceiling...Deep Breath

Things are progressing here....slowly. I have the whole nursery in my head (for the most part). However, reality is getting in the way. The first thing I knew I wanted to do with the nursery was wallpaper. That progressed to wallpapering the ceiling. Well, you see, I have run into some problems, the primary ones being low ceilings and expensive taste. The B word (budget) is looming in the air and we are not sure how long we will be in this house. Soooo, spending a lot on wallpaper that a future buyer* will probably not appreciate did not make sense. Enter a painted ceiling.

Here are some ideas I had for a tone on tone ceiling pattern. Oh the possibilities. BUT, I showed my painter and let's just say this route doesn't help the ole budget as I had hoped. Back to the drawing board....

*We are not planning on moving any time soon but our house is square footage challenged and I am sure in the next couple of years this will become a problem.

Reader Nursery

I love when readers send me pictures of their rooms and recently I opened my mailbox to find a gem. Of course I am always looking for nursery inspiration these days but to have one this cute delivered right to me was such a treat! The owners did almost the whole thing by themselves with LOTS of paint and it really paid off. Thank you Angie, I know Evie is loving her new home!!!!

The Nursery: Crib?

Several people have asked me if I have started on the nursery and the answer sadly is....No. I have started telling people at this rate the baby is going to be sleeping in a basket for a while once he gets here. Seriously though, I plan on starting sometime in June, there is just not enough time right now.

Working on so many other nurseries I thought I knew what I would do for a crib. I thought it would be a painted Jenny Lind...

I still really love this look and I am sure I will use it again sometime (above images are not mine, I will try to dig some up). However, I think I want to do something different. I have really liked this Ikea crib for a while now but I am just not sure. Has anyone out there used an Ikea crib? I would love to hear some feed back. I am drawn to the panels and really the color of the wood too which is surprising.

I might look into just a plain one like this one (but not so red). Nothing fancy but I do not want anything large or ornate for this crib.

The budget will not be going towards a crib but if it was these from Restoration Hardware would be top of my list...

So who knows what it will be. As soon as I really get into gear I will let you know what I am thinking!

Add It To The Nursery Wish List...

Cough, cough. My computer (still under seige - I am on a temp right now which causes some procrastination) is not the only thing sick in the Strong household at the moment. It seems my maiden hair fern decided it no longer wanted to live in this world and kicked the bucket. It may look lively in this picture, but it is actually very dead. R.I.P. little fern, you made it a couple of months which is good all things considered.

Which brings me to this little fun thing that I want to add to my wish list for Baby Strong's nursery...

I came across it on Daily Candy today and I think it would be so cute on a shelf somewhere. No, I haven't even started on his future home, yet here I am looking at a planter for the nursery. Where are my priorities and who puts a plant in a kids room? Oh, I do. And a plant like the one shown would probably met a much a better fate than my poor Maiden Hair.

More Paper Inspiration

Tomorrow we find out what we having and then it will be time to start thinking about the nursery. Anthropologie already inspired me with a rocker (which unless my fairy godmother shows up will not be ours) and now their wallpaper has my wheels spinning as well...
